What is Domain?

A %20 domain name is the name and address of a website on the internet. Without this address, internet users can only access a website through its IP address. For example, wikipedia.org is a domain name. Domain names are simplified, more memorable versions of IP addresses—numeric systems that allow computers (servers) to recognize each other. When a domain name is typed into a browser's address bar, the browser first translates it into an IP address and then directs the user to the computer (server) associated with that IP address. Therefore, since users typically cannot remember or recognize IP addresses, it is important to choose a domain name that is easy to remember and access. To obtain a domain name, one can contact an internet service provider or request a web hosting company to register a domain on their behalf. In fact, domain names are not purchased outright—they are leased for a certain period. This is why domain names must be renewed periodically, up to a maximum of ten years. Typically, domains are registered for a minimum of one year and can be extended up to ten years. In Turkey, domain names with the country code .tr (such as .com.tr, .net.tr, and others) are managed and allocated by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK). These domain names can be registered for a maximum period of five years.
